LEND/LEDBP Program

UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS FOR MEDICAL SCIENCES (UAMS)
DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS
LEADERSHIP EDUCATION IN NEURO-DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (LEND) AND LEADERSHIP EDUCATION IN DEVELOPMENTAL BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICS (LEDBP) PROGRAMS OF ARKANSAS

The Arkansas LEND and LEDBP programs located on the campus of Arkansas Children’s Hospital are directly supported by the UAMS Department of Pediatrics, the University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) , the state’s Title V organization and the Association of University Centers of Disabilities (AUCD). The Arkansas LEND and LEDBP programs are a part of a national network of similar collaborative programs comprised of a wide range of faculty and experts with the sole purpose to improve the health of infants, children and adolescents with disabilities.

The LEND and LEDBP programs of Arkansas recognize that 15-18% of children have developmental and behavioral problems. This grouping includes a number of specific conditions, including autism spectrum disorders which impact one out of every one hundred and forty five children in the state. The Arkansas LEND and LEDBP programs recognize too few health professionals have the necessary skills to diagnose and intervene with neuro-developmental disabilities.

The American Board of Pediatrics estimate there are only five hundred and twenty pediatricians board certified in the subspecialty of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) combined with the fact very few educational hours are devoted to training other health professionals. The purpose of the Arkansas LEND and LEDBD projects funded by the Maternal of Child Health Bureau (MCHB) of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) are to advance the knowledge and skills of a full range of child health professionals and improve health care delivery systems for children with developmental disabilities including Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Fellowships are available for both LEND  and LEDBP as outlined on our fellowship page.
